Job Description

We are in search of a motivated individual seeking to build a career within the native plant production industry. We need a team member who will play a key role in the development and management of our Grow division. The position will be partially funded through the Eco Canada Internship Program.

As a small company, our work environment can change depending on the tasks at hand and requires flexibility, excellent communication, as well as enthusiasm and high stress tolerance. Summer is our busy season and your work ethic must include willingness to work overtime when required. Applicants must have strong attention to detail and should be physically fit with good stamina. Work will occur at the Edmonton office grow-op and in the field nursery in Beaumont.

Compensation

This is a permanent, full time position starting April 1, 2018 (or earlier if weather permits). Monetary compensation is in form of a salary, starting at $36,000. Scheduled hours of work include 48 hours per week based on nursery labour standards. Two weeks of paid vacation is permitted.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers license or equivalent, along with daily access to a reliable vehicle and cell phone service and show proof of eligibility for the Eco Canada internship. Save yourself time and do not apply otherwise.

The successful candidate will have a degree or diploma in: 
Agriculture, Environmental Science, Ecology, Horticulture, Nursery horticulture, or Plant Propagation.

Responsibilities

  • Seedling production and care
  • Monitoring of plant growth and health
  • Expansion and operation of an ebb & flow irrigation system
  • Preparation of plant orders for sales and planting
  • Development of an internal plant propagation manual
  • Collection of seeds, processing and stratification
  • Manage weed infestations in and around the nursery

Native Plant Production Assistant

Job Description

The plant production assistant is an exciting opportunity in native plant propagation and maintenance. We are in search of summer laborers to help us manage our growing inventory of flowers, grasses and trees. Work will occur at the Edmonton office grow op and in the field nursery in Beaumont. As a small company, our work environment can change depending on the tasks at hand and requires flexibility, excellent communication, as well as enthusiasm and stress tolerance. This position periodically requires heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs) and performing repetitive tasks, in all weather conditions. Applicants must have strong attention to detail and should be physically fit with good stamina. Your work ethic must include a willingness to work overtime as needed.

Compensation

This is a temporary position starting in late April 2018 (or earlier) until August 31, 2018, with the possibility of continuing until November. Monetary compensation ranges from $15 to $20 per hour, depending upon experience. Scheduled hours of work include 48 hours per week based on nursery labour standards. All employees are permitted 1 week paid vacation.

You will also come away with improved plant ID skills, especially native plants and their growing conditions. A real life perspective on plant propagation and problem solving skills. The Field Assistant is an exciting opportunity in native plant installation and site maintenance. We are in search of summer laborers to help us rebuild and care for urban greenspace and residential ecosystems by planting native flowers, grasses and trees. Work will occur on project sites throughout city, mainly Southeast and Southwest Edmonton. As a small company, our work environment can change depending on the tasks at hand and requires flexibility, excellent communication, as well as enthusiasm and stress tolerance. This position requires heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs) and performing repetitive tasks, in all weather conditions. Applicants must have strong attention to detail and should be physically fit with good stamina. Your work ethic must include a willingness to work overtime as needed.

Compensation

This is a temporary position starting in May 2018 (or earlier) until August 31, 2018, with the possibility of continuing until November. Monetary compensation ranges from $15 to $20 per hour, depending upon experience. Scheduled hours of work include 40 hours per week with the option to bank overtime hours. All employees are permitted 1 week paid vacation.

You will also come away with elevated plant ID skills especially native plants and their growing conditions. Learn about the importance of ecosystem services and how we can all take steps to improve our quality of life through naturalization. Get exposure to residential landscaping and learn transferable skills related to soil structure and hydrology manipulation.
